FAQsSafetySpecialsWhy Nor'Banks?
Who can parasail?
Parasailing is an excellent option for nearly everyone! Participants must be able to fit snugly in the proper-size harness, and the combined weight of the 1, 2 or 3 people on your flight must be between 150 and 450 pounds. Minimum weights may need to be higher depending on conditions. Children as young as 5 years old may parasail. Our extra-small harness fits children as small as 35 pounds. If you have any specific concerns due to health, mobility or other issues, please call us and we will discuss your options.
What time should I arrive at Nor'Banks?
To ensure a timely departure, we ask all of our customers to arrive 30 minutes before their scheduled parasail adventure.
What should I bring?
Prepare as you would for the beach. Bring water, a towel, sunscreen and a hat, as there is no shade on the parasail boat. A bathing suit is the best attire, especially if you would like to take a dip in the water at the end of your flight. You may also want to bring extra layers for sun protection and cool weather, as well as cash to tip the crew. We also have many of these items available for purchase in our shop.
What should I avoid bringing?
We’ll ask you to leave your shoes on the pier and to apply sunscreen before you leave shore. You can lock valuables in your car and leave your keys with our office staff.
Will I get wet?
The Icarus II is an Ocean Pro 31, the driest parasail boat in production. However, the shuttle ride to the boat can get a little wet on choppy days. You will stay dry on your parasail ride unless you opt for a dip in the water on the way back in.
How long will I be out on the boat?
The length of your boat ride will depend on the number of flights scheduled. Expect to be on the water between 45 and 90 minutes.
Can I choose to fly side by side with friends and family?
Yes! You may choose to fly with a double or triple group. However, the captain may alter your chosen combinations based on your weight and the weather conditions. We do our best to make sure that these changes work in your favor. For example, if your triple is too heavy to fly, we can turn it into two doubles by flying one member of your party twice for no extra charge. The total weight requirement for passengers flying together is between 150 and 450 pounds (range is subject to change based on wind and weather conditions). A single flier can’t weigh more than 350 pounds.
Do you offer private trips?

Our parasail boat accommodates up to 12 passengers, and typically, you will be going out with other parties. Ask us about private trips if you have a larger group.

How high up will I be?

Our three options, “Chicken”, “Duck” and “Eagle,” will get you about 200, 350 or 400 feet off the water (with 500, 700 and 800 feet of towline used, respectively). Your exact altitude will vary based on weather conditions, but to put it in perspective, on the Eagle flight, our most popular option, you’ll be soaring as high as 40 stories — the maximum height allowed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) anywhere in the country!

How long is the flight?
Each flight is 10-12 minutes depending on the height you choose.
Is it customary to tip?
It’s customary to tip the captain and crew 15-20% for good service. If you feel that your experience was less than you hoped for, please let us know and we will make it right!
Can I come along if I am not parasailing?
We can guarantee a spot for 1 observer per party for a charge of $35 if there’s room on the boat. Additional observers may be added as space allows. Observers must be able-bodied and in good physical condition.

Our Safety Commitment in Plain English

Our captains are active WSIA members who help write the national standards for parasailing safety — not just follow them. Every boat is Coast Guard certified, every piece of equipment is inspected daily, and we will never fly in conditions we wouldn’t put our own families in.

  • WSIA Active Members — our captains attend annual meetings and help develop the industry safety guidelines
  • Coast Guard Certified — the Icarus II is inspected annually and certified to carry 12 passengers
  • Custom Chutes Equipment — industry-leading harnesses and parachutes, inspected daily and replaced on schedule
  • CPR/First Aid Certified Crew — all captains and mates are certified and drug-tested
  • Weather-First Policy — we monitor conditions constantly and will reschedule rather than fly in borderline conditions

What to Look For in Any Parasail Operation

  • Answer safety questions confidently — Coast Guard certification, training, equipment age and inspection history
  • Give you the smallest harness you can comfortably fit — fit matters in a water landing
  • Refuse to fly in borderline conditions, even if it means rescheduling your trip
  • Replace and repair equipment according to manufacturer and WSIA recommendations — not just when something breaks

Captain Sean McShea

Captain Sean has been with Nor’Banks for over ten years. Review after review, families mention him by name — the way he puts nervous kids at ease, the music he plays, the extra mile he goes without being asked. He’s the reason people come back year after year.

The Highest Flights in the U.S.

Our Eagle flight reaches 800 feet — the FAA maximum, and the highest parasail flight available anywhere in the country. Most first-timers say they wished they’d gone higher. Go Eagle.

The Best Equipment, Maintained Like It Matters

We use Custom Chutes harnesses and parachutes — the industry gold standard. Equipment is inspected daily, logged, and replaced on schedule. Our flagship vessel, the Icarus II, is a Coast Guard-certified Ocean Pro 31, the driest and most comfortable parasail boat on the market.

We Help Set the National Safety Standard

As active WSIA members, our captains and management don’t just follow the national guidelines for parasailing safety — we attend annual meetings and participate in developing them. When you’re putting your family in a harness 800 feet up, that distinction matters.

A Facility Worth the Trip On Its Own

Our waterfront location on the Currituck Sound has free parking, shaded lawn space, showers and changing rooms, and The Village Table and Tavern right upstairs — fresh seafood, Sound views, and live music. Make a day of it.

We Stand Behind Every Experience

If your time with us falls short of what you hoped for, tell us. We’ll make it right. That’s not a policy — it’s how we’ve operated since 1979.
